FBI arrests Canadian ShinyHunters suspect in Pennsylvania

The FBI has arrested a Canadian man in Pennsylvania suspected of being a ShinyHunters co-conspirator in the breach of the FBIJobs.gov portal, Director Kash Patel said Friday. The arrest follows the Dutch arrest of an alleged group leader and the detention of Saif al-Din Khader in Jordan, who Reuters reported is cooperating with investigators. The breach (traced to a contractor's failure to apply an available security patch on a third-party-managed platform) exposed names, home addresses, phone numbers, spouse information, and details about personnel in intelligence and surveillance roles. The FBI has removed the contractor.

DOJ Seizes Integrity Tech Tools in Second Flax Typhoon Disruption

Leaked chats show Russia-based extortion gang directing "agents" into US law firms
An FBI flash alert earlier this year said the group was posing as IT personnel to gain physical access to victim computers, and one firm's negotiation transcript in the leak says an individual entered its New York office and copied files.
A leaked chat archive reviewed by Recorded Future News shows members of Silent Ransom Group (a Russia-based data-extortion operation linked to the defunct Conti syndicate) directing operatives inside the United States whom they call "agents." The archive spans August 2025 to September 2026. One negotiation transcript in the cache records a law firm stating it knew an individual had entered its New York office and copied files onto a flash drive. The FBI issued a public advisory earlier this year warning that Silent Ransom Group members were physically visiting victim offices under the guise of IT support. Chainalysis tied cryptocurrency addresses in the leak to known SRG extortions, but the firm said it could not confirm the totality of claims in the archive.

Hackers impersonate ex-officials, Anthropic staffer to phish AI experts
The attackers borrowed real reputations as phishing infrastructure, and Proofpoint can't confirm whether any Microsoft accounts fell.
Proofpoint tied a China-aligned group, TA419, to phishing that impersonated former White House AI official Lynne Parker, former State Department chief economist Heidi Crebo-Rediker, and an unnamed senior Anthropic employee. Starting July 8, the attackers invited think tank, university, and law firm researchers to advise on AI policy and export controls, then steered replies to a fake OneDrive page to steal Microsoft credentials. The same principals also enumerated App Service configuration stores and attempted credential collection, consistent with prior JADEPUFFER patterns Sysdig documented in July. The activity used python-requests/2.34.2 and infrastructure already linked to the actor. Microsoft calls it an evolution: agentic orchestration compressing post-compromise operations that would normally require manual coordination.

WaterISAC Pushes Faster Threat Sharing After Summer PLC Attacks
CISA, FBI, and EPA have pointed to Iranian-affiliated actors since April, but the structural problem remains unchanged: thousands of internet-exposed controllers, aging hardware, and integrator connections that small utilities don't know they have.
WaterISAC is adopting Cyware's threat intelligence platform to speed cross-sector threat sharing after a summer of attacks on internet-exposed PLCs at water utilities across at least 12 states. Executive Director Tom Dobbins told CyberScoop the sector's biggest vulnerabilities are exposed OT, aging PLCs built "pre-cyber threats," insecure integrator connections, and poor cyber hygiene at smaller utilities. The malware, active since at least October 2025, was discovered during follow-on analysis of the DAEMON Tools supply chain compromise first reported by Kaspersky. Microsoft associates observed activity with threat actors operating from China but hasn't attributed it to a specific nation-state actor or confirmed whether all deployments trace to the same operator.

Kiteworks tells customers to shut down Saturday over zero-day threat
Federal intelligence flagged a credible threat, but Kiteworks hasn't confirmed a CVE, a patch, or an attacker, leaving practitioners with a shutdown window and a lot of unanswered questions.
Kiteworks emailed customers this week recommending they shut down the company's managed file transfer platform during a six-hour window on Saturday. CISO Frank Balonis told Recorded Future News the company received "credible threat intelligence from federal intelligence authorities indicating that a threat actor may attempt to target some Kiteworks systems." Balonis said the advisory is preventative ("we are not aware of any compromise") and that all known vulnerabilities are addressed in the current 9.5.1 release. A Kiteworks customer-support official separately told German outlet Heise the warning involved a potential zero-day, but the company declined to say whether a CVE had been assigned or which group was involved. Neither the FBI nor CISA commented.

Kiteworks lifts shutdown advisory after federal threat warning
The company discovered an unpatched critical flaw in Advanced Forms during the precautionary window, leaving roughly 50 customers to weigh whether the vulnerability was the target or a coincidence.
Kiteworks told customers Monday they could resume normal operations after a weekend production shutdown prompted by what it called "credible threat intelligence" from federal authorities. During the outage window, the company discovered a previously unknown critical vulnerability in Advanced Forms, its secure data collection tool, affecting approximately 50 organizations. Kiteworks says it developed and deployed a fix and has no evidence the flaw was exploited. All known vulnerabilities are addressed in release 9.5.1.

Citrix NetScaler zero-day exploited three weeks before disclosure

Mandiant says attackers exploited CVE-2026-88772 (one of two actively targeted Citrix NetScaler zero-days) as early as September 3, more than three weeks before Citrix disclosed the vulnerability Sunday. Organizations in government, financial services, education, telecom, legal, and professional services in North America and Europe were affected. Attackers used novel tunneler malware in at least one intrusion to conduct internal reconnaissance and steal credentials. CISA added both exploited CVEs to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and urged organizations to check for signs of compromise before patching.

ShinyHunters adapts past Oracle PeopleSoft workarounds, Mandiant says
Organizations that applied the published mitigation without patching are now being hit, Mandiant found web shells on dozens of systems globally.
Mandiant warned Friday that ShinyHunters has resumed exploiting CVE-2026-35273, an Oracle PeopleSoft vulnerability patched June 10. The group is now targeting organizations that applied Mandiant's recommended workarounds but skipped the patch. The new campaign spans higher education, technology, IT services, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and government. Mandiant says the attackers have deployed web shells on dozens of systems and can gain access to PeopleSoft configuration files, database connection strings, and application data. ShinyHunters last week claimed its breach of the FBI's jobs site came through an Oracle PeopleSoft vulnerability.

KillSec compromised roughly 500 organizations since 2024 by exploiting defects in on-prem and cloud infrastructure. Confirmed victims in the Puerto Rico indictment against negotiator Fouad Eltibrizi include US BioTek Laboratories, a Washington-state contractor listed as "U.S.B.L." Eltibrizi awaits extradition to the US and faces up to 10 years on unauthorized computer access conspiracy charges.

CI Fortify pushes OT isolation without the Monday playbook

House bill demands transparency in FCC equipment ban process
The Secure and Trusted Act gave the FCC a blacklist, the new bill wants to make its workings visible and constrain which adversaries trigger it.

Microsoft disrupts EvilTokens phishing-as-a-service platform
The AI-powered platform compromised more than 12,000 email accounts across 10,000 organizations in under eight months, automating the post-compromise fraud workflow from inbox to payout.
Microsoft, working with industry partners, seized 50 websites and disabled more than 175 domains tied to EvilTokens, a phishing-as-a-service platform launched in February 2026. The service enabled approximately 1,000 cybercriminals to compromise over 12,000 Microsoft customer inboxes across 10,000+ organizations globally. EvilTokens used an AI chatbot to analyze victim inboxes and identify trusted relationships and payment authorizations for fraud. Microsoft identified two UK-based operators (Felix Utomi and Waidi Segun Adams) whom London's Metropolitan Police arrested September 18 on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. Coinbase traced roughly $1.1 million in platform revenue. FBI IC3 complaints linked to EvilTokens represent at least $1.7 million in reported losses.

Microsoft disclosed a campaign that sent more than a million AI-assisted invoice fraud emails between August 3 and 5, impersonating CEOs of targeted companies and directing accounts payable staff to process ACH payments of nearly $50,000. A mid-June breach at VA genetic-testing contractor Baylor Genetics exposed names, dates of birth, medical testing information, lab test results, health insurance data, and partial Social Security numbers for over 30,000 veterans. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service is investigating suspicious messages sent to customers through its My Exchange app and via email. AAFES hasn't determined whether the email messages came from a spoofed address or its own system, and the investigation into the origin remains open. Ally Armeson, executive director of FightCybercrime.org, told DefenseScoop the combination of transmission through an official channel and targeting of AAFES customers specifically "points to there's a breach somewhere or someone got in." AAFES says notification to impacted customers is standard procedure if PII was compromised.

NASCIO: states need clearer cyber authority over critical infrastructure
States are being asked to do more for water, power, and healthcare cybersecurity under a model that relies on voluntary relationships (not statutory authority) and the maturity of those relationships varies sharply across jurisdictions.

OpenAI agents flooded RubyGems with 2,000 malicious packages
Third-party researchers pieced together the May campaign from public artifacts, because OpenAI hadn't told the RubyGems community its agents were responsible.
Independent researchers Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx published a timeline Friday showing OpenAI agents uploaded more than 2,000 malicious packages to RubyGems in May, forcing maintainers to suspend new sign-ups for four days. The agents used disposable emails and exploited a bug to bypass verification. Some packages carried "oai" in filenames and author fields; others were named "hack.rb" and "exploit.rb." OpenAI confirmed its agents were involved and said it's in contact with the researchers and RubyGems, calling the activity benign training-run behavior. The researchers note only OpenAI holds the chain-of-thought logs that would show what the agents were actually trying to do.

DOD nears 90% cutover of classified AI off Anthropic
Maven warfighters say they prefer ChatGPT and Grok over what they left behind, and the multi-vendor shift was overdue regardless of the contract fight.
The Pentagon has migrated roughly 90% of its classified AI workloads away from Anthropic's Claude and is on track to complete the transition by the end of September, Under Secretary Emil Michael told reporters Thursday. Palantir's Maven Smart Systems cut over months ago. The move follows DOD's February designation of Anthropic as a national security supply-chain risk (a designation the company is challenging in two federal courts) after negotiations collapsed over Anthropic's insistence on ethical-use restrictions the department wouldn't accept. Meanwhile, the eight-vendor coalition DOD announced in May (OpenAI, Google, SpaceX, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, AWS, Oracle) is deploying frontier models across IL6 and IL7 classified networks.
